Deb Jewett and Willie Cogshell sing, “There’s nothing better than a river life,” and that pretty much sums up this “winding, twining, twisty, frisky musical, Gumbo Bottoms. The show will be performed at Turner Hall, 518 Vine Street in Boonville, Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12 at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, July 13 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for students and seniors and are available at Family Shoe Store, 407 Main Street in
Boonville or by calling 660-882-2390. This original musical, set in the late 20's, follows the story of Vivian Marks, a wealthy easterner played by Lesley Oswald, who loses her fortune, except for a piece of bottom land in Missouri. When she comes to claim her property, Vivian encounters her neighbors, a flood, a shanty boat, an Indian mound and a scoundrel. Inspired by stories collected along the river, the musical delivers lots of laughs, maybe a few tears, and a darn good time with toe tapping tunes and heart felt melodies.
The show is sponsored by the Turner Hall River Rats with support from Missouri Arts Council. Gumbo Bottoms will also be performed July 19 aboard the river boat, Queen of the Mississippi. Information about the cruise is available at www.phyllisdale.com.
Joining the cast are composer and musician, Cathy Barton along with Dave Para on guitar, Kevin Hennessy on bass and David Wilson on fiddle. A studio recording of the musical was produced in the spring and CDs will be available at the show or by visiting www.GumboBottomsMusical.com. Turner Hall River Rats for the Arts is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide creative opportunities for citizens of this region.
